Reducing Water Consumption
Fyffes reduces water consumption by 80% by using a pioneering water recycling system at its banana farm in Costa Rica.
We’ve been getting our bananas from Central and South America for many years. Why wouldn’t we – the climate is ideal and the bananas are some of the tastiest in the world! But that’s not the whole story. The key to delicious, responsibly produced fruit is an effective partnership with the local grower community.
Fifty-two species of hummingbird. A mind-boggling variety of butterflies. Over 20,000 different spiders. When it comes to natural diversity few places on Earth can top Costa Rica. Wow, Leatherback turtles can grow to 2 meters in length! But that’s only if they survive to make the mad dash to the sea as tiny hatchlings. And that’s where our Panamanian friends from COOBANA come in. They support the local conservation centre and by patrolling the beaches for several months each year, they have helped to save 12,000 eggs and safely release 8,100 baby turtles to the water.
Chances are that as a baby, your first finger food was a banana – possibly given to you by your loving grandparents. And when you started school, your lunchbox had a banana in it (thanks mom and dad). Then when you moved into your own place, you discovered for yourself how useful bananas were as a snack or as a cooking ingredient – and how good they were for a workout! And before you knew it, you were watching your own baby wipe mashed banana into her hair… and the cycle began again.
